Dr. Wirth is a board-certified neurosurgeon with a special interest in the treatment of benign and malignant brain and pituitary tumors. His expertise includes stereotactic biopsy and microsurgical removal of these tumors as well as stereotactic radiosurgical treatment. He has extensive experience in the surgical management of arteriosclerotic diseases of the carotid artery and aneurysms involving the brain. His years of experience in the management of cervical and lumbar disc disease includes minimally invasive and microsurgical approaches.
After earning his medical degree at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Wirth completed a surgical internship and a general surgical fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served as a clinical associate in neurosurgery at the National Institutes of Health for two years. He completed his neurosurgery residency and fellowship at Barnes Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Wirth is currently an assistant clinical professor, Department of Surgery, Neurosurgery, at the Medical College of Georgia. He has served as an officer in many national, regional and local neurosurgical organizations. Dr. Wirth is a past president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and is a former director and vice chairman of the American Board of Neurosurgery, the credentialing organization for neurosurgeons in the United States. He has also served on the board of directors of the national "Think First" Foundation for the prevention of head and spinal cord injury and was the director and organizer of the Georgia Head and Spinal Injury Prevention Program.
Dr. Wirth has co-edited a series of neurosurgical books and has authored books and book chapters on neurosurgical critical care and cervical disc disease in addition to more than twenty-five peer-reviewed publications. His research interests have included diseases of the cervical spine and vascular diseases of the brain and carotid arteries. Dr. Wirth has expertise in the management of malignant and benign brain tumors including stereotactic biopsy and stereotactic radiosurgical treatment of these tumors. He has a special interest in the treatment of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s Disease and intention tremor, This expertise and interest was initiated during his years of research and training at the National Institutes of Health. He has over ten years of experience with deep brain stimulation in Savannah. In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Wirth performs independent neurosurgical evaluations.
His practice is based at the Neurological Institute’s office in Savannah.
